Description
Fire Safety Symbols Fire safety symbols are available in different sizes, making them clearly visible from different distances. These symbols are available in different materials such as plastic, aluminium and plexiglass, with options for different mounting types such as flat, angular, panoramic or ceiling. For environments where continuous visibility is crucial, we offer photoluminescent symbols that glow in the dark. These provide clear signals, even in low-light situations.
Fire safety symbols according to ISO 7010 Many fire safety symbols comply with the international standard ISO 7010, which ensures worldwide uniformity in the symbols used. These symbols can be recognized by the addition of a "flame" icon. In the Netherlands, additional symbols are used according to NEN 3011, in which the "flame" is also included.
Previously, the mixed use of old and new symbols (with the "flame") was discouraged, but today it is recommended to consistently use the new ISO 7010 symbols. In new situations it is strongly recommended to use the newest symbols. Although we recommend using the symbol with the "flame", in existing situations it is allowed to keep the already present symbols.
Legal obligations In every European member state, it is required by law to indicate fire safety measures with symbols. The European Directive 92/58/EEC provides the basis for uniform safety and health signage in the workplace within the EU. This directive specifies requirements for the use of safety colours and signals to inform employees about possible hazards and emergency procedures.
Each Member State implements this Directive in its own way; in the Netherlands through the Working Conditions Regulation and in Belgium through the Royal Decree of 17 June 1997. This means that employers in the Netherlands are obliged to install adequate safety signage in places where there are health or safety risks for employees. This not only complies with European standards for occupational safety, but also ensures a uniform and standardised approach to safety signage at national level. Important aspects of this regulation regarding fire safety symbols include:
- Permanently indicating the location and identification of fire-fighting equipment with signs and/or a safety colour.
- The identification of fire-fighting equipment must be done by colouring the equipment and by means of a location sign and/or colouring the places or accesses to the locations where the fire-fighting equipment is located.
- The identification color for fire fighting equipment is red.
- In poor natural light conditions, fluorescent colours, reflective materials or artificial lighting must be used, without prejudice to the provisions of Directive 89/654/EEC.
